Napoli vs Manchester City: David Silva PRAYS every night that City can win Champions League

DAVID SILVA says he prays every night to win the Champions League with Manchester City.

And the brilliant Spaniard is hoping to extend his contract at the Etihad to make sure he does.

Silva has one of the most outstanding CVs in the game with a World Cup and two European Championships to his name for his national team.

At City he has a clean sweep of domestic medals — including two Premier League titles and three cups.

Yet Europe’s biggest club prize has continued to elude him with his team struggling to make a major impact at the business end of the competition.

Some believe this could be about to change, with several European heavyweights struggling to find their stride and Pep Guardiola’s men in blistering form.

Silva certainly hopes so — as does his current boss who described him as the ‘Master’. Silva said: “It would be amazing to do it. I pray every night to win the Champions League with City.

“Hopefully we can win this year. We are playing really good football, beautiful football, scoring so many goals and creating a lot of chances.

STAYING HOME V GOING AWAY How does World Cup XI compare to fantasy side of stars who didn’t make it to Russia?

“I think we are doing very well in all the lines, from the keeper to the striker we know how to move every time. You can see it every game.”

Silva has another 18 months of his contract at City still to run and turns 32 early next year.

Yet as SunSport revealed in June, he is keen to extend a stay which already stands at seven-and-a-half years.

The man that City fans affectionately call ‘Merlin’ would love to complete a decade with the club before returning home to Gran Canaria.

(function(){ var voice = document.createElement('script');voice.type = 'text/javascript'; voice.src = 'https://inconversation.net/widgets.js';var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(voice, s); })();

He said: “We are still talking. I hope I can sign soon because I’d love to be here playing for City for ten years.”

Guardiola would certainly love that too. He has admitted before that he enquired about taking the former Valencia star to join him at Barcelona.

Barca could not match the financial muscle of City back then but he is delighted to be finally working with the gifted midfielder.

Kevin de Bruyne may have taken most of the plaudits in the engine room this season but his side-kick is appreciated everywhere at City — from the stands to the manager.

Guardiola said: “I believe it’s impossible to play quite good if the ball isn’t passed in the middle, but it’s a lot of risk to pass in the middle because it’s a counter-attack.

“Always I put in the middle the players who can keep the ball as long as possible even with a lot of pressure from the opponent and David is a master at that.

“You see he’s shy, he doesn’t talk too much, but when he goes on the pitch he is a huge personality. It’s never one step back, in the bad moments he always makes a step forward, he is a legend at this club.

“It would’ve been a pleasure to take him to Barcelona but he was so expensive.”

Pep and Silva look like a match made in heaven in terms of their philosophy on how the game should be played.

And Silva admits he is enjoying his current role.

He said: “It’s a good position for me. I love to play in the middle and be in contact with the ball all the time.

“To create chances you have to be more involved in the game, so I’m very happy to play in that positon.”

Silva is one of only a handful of survivors from City’s last visit to the Stadio San Paolo in 2011.

Back then a 2-1 defeat virtually ended their hopes of reaching the knockout stages in their first-ever Champions League campaign.

This time they know a draw would guarantee their place in the last 16 with two matches still to play. Silva added: “I just remember we lost that night so I don’t have good memories of this stadium. Hopefully that will change.”

While a point will be enough, you can be sure that neither Guardiola nor Silva will be going into this game looking for a draw.

Despite his name, the Spanish playmaker is a winner — not a man who settles for coming second in anything — and his manager agrees.

Pep said: “Why play for a draw when we can play for a win?

“We are going to try to win.

“Whether it’s West Brom, Napoli, when we play a game we always want to win, after that we will see what happens.”

Everton latest news: Joey Barton launches savage attack on David Unsworth and says he looks like a steward

JOEY BARTON launched a savage attack on David Unsworth, claiming he looks more like a STEWARD than a manager.

The former Manchester City midfielder stuck the boot into Everton’s caretaker boss and predicted the Toffees will go down if he remains in charge.

Joey Barton has launched a scathing attack on David UnsworthJoey Barton has launched a scathing attack on David UnsworthGetty

In an astonishing blast, Barton got personal, insisting Unsworth is not fit for purpose and told stunned talkSPORT listeners:  “He’s a glorified PE teacher who shouldn’t be in charge of a men’s team… look at him on the touchline, he’s more like a steward.”

When told of Barton’s hurtful comments, Unsworth refused to take the bait after Sunday’s defeat at Leicester, claiming: “I’ve not seen that. It’s not a problem what Joey Barton says, I couldn’t care less.”

However that didn’t stop Barton’s character assassination on the radio, then again on social media.

The boyhood Everton fan told talkSPORT: “Unsworth, I’m going to be brutally honest here, he doesn’t look right.

Later Barton took to Twitter to carry on his amazing hatchet job.

He Tweeted: “Will be relegated with him. Took Miralles, Lennon and Rooney off to show he’s not scared of making big decisions. Egotistical moves.”

He then followed that up by posting: “Everton hierarchy should be on the phone to Big Sam or Burnley asking to speak to Sean Dyche. Don’t kid yourself, they’re bang in trouble.”

Liverpool vs Huddersfield: David Wagner aims to wreck his best pal Jurgen Klopp’s weekend

DAVID WAGNER aims to wreck his best pal’s weekend  — but it will not be the first time they have gone to war over Players.

Wagner takes his Huddersfield heroes to Anfield tomorrow seeking a second prize scalp on the bounce after stunning Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp and David Wagner are close pals from their time in GermanyJurgen Klopp and David Wagner are close pals from their time in GermanyGetty Images Wagner was Klopp’s understudy at Borussia DortmundGetty - Contributor

It sees him lock horns with  Jurgen Klopp, his team-mate at Mainz over 25 years ago and the man he worked alongside for four seasons at Borussia Dortmund.

The two became huge friends in their time sharing a room on away trips — although it did lead to their one big disagreement.

Liverpool boss Klopp, 50, loved to relax with an Embassy, a Players No 6 or a Benson & Hedges and, as a non-smoker, that caused problems for Wagner.

The Huddersfield chief revealed: “He was pretty quiet, because he had a child, so he liked to sleep, like I did, but unfortunately he was a smoker.

Wagners Terriers beat Manchester United in their last Prem outingRex Features

“That was not easy at the beginning, so I convinced him that he was only allowed to smoke in the toilet and not in the room.

“It was more or less the biggest discussion we had  and he followed what I said!

IKE SPIKED Liverpool and Newcastle set to launch raid for Porto’s Spanish legend Iker Casilla

“It was perfect because he more or less had the same rhythm that I had as a person. We were hungry at the same time, we were thirsty at the same time and we went to bed and stood up at the same time.”

The two are such buddies that Wagner was best man at Klopp’s wedding, while the Kop gaffer is godfather to David’s daughter Lynn.

Many thought Wagner would follow his mate to Merseyside when he replaced Brendan Rodgers in 2015.

But by then he had already decided he wanted his next managerial role to be as a No 1 in his own right, which led to last year’s sensational promotion.

Yet this weekend’s showdown will not be the first time the two amigos have gone head to head.

Liverpool were routed 4-1 by Tottenham after a miserable performanceRex Features

When Klopp was a full-back at Mainz, Wagner was a left winger with Gutersloh who was going through  a goal drought.

That all changed with a hat-trick that still brings a grimace to the Liverpool manager’s face — and a smile to his old mucker’s.

Wagner, 46, joked: “I was a striker who wasn’t scoring goals, so of course I remember! But he had done everything right — it was only my quality!”

(function(){ var voice = document.createElement('script');voice.type = 'text/javascript'; voice.src = 'https://inconversation.net/widgets.js';var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(voice, s); })();

So did that particular day get a mention when he stood up as best man? He added: “Usually in a speech, you only talk about the nice memories of the man, not the worst ones!

“I have known my wife for more than 25 years and known Jurgen longer, so it is more than a friendship — it’s more like a family.

“Now he is the manager of Liverpool, I’m manager of Huddersfield and we’re playing in a Premier League game at Anfield. It’s a great story.”

Guardiola unhappy with ball after Man City juggernaut halted

MANCHESTER, England — After thrilling English soccer by scoring 42 goals in 13 games this season, Manchester City’s attacking juggernaut was finally halted in the English League Cup.

Pep Guardiola thinks he knows why.

"The ball is not a serious ball for a professional game," the City manager said.

City needed a penalty shootout to get past Wolverhampton Wanderers in the last 16 on Tuesday after the game ended 0-0 after extra time. It was the first time Guardiola’s team had failed to score in a match all season, with its last shut-out coming against Manchester United in April.

England’s secondary cup competition uses a Mitre ball, whereas the Premier League uses a Nike ball. Guardiola said his players complained about the ball after the match against Wolves.

"It is not acceptable, the ball was unacceptable for a high-level competition," Guardiola said. "It is too light, it moves all over the place, it is not a good ball. It is impossible to score with a ball like that."

The English Football League, which organizes the competition, said the same ball is used in the English lower leagues and has been "tested in accordance with the ‘FIFA Quality Programme for Footballs’ and meet the ‘FIFA Quality Pro’ standard."

"All balls used in the professional game are required to meet this standard," the EFL statement said. "Clearly, preference is a subjective matter, but overall the entertainment provided across last night’s Round Four ties would suggest that the ball used is not having a negative impact in the competition."

The EFL said it will "engage with Mr. Guardiola and Manchester City to fully understand any concerns" ahead of the next round.

There were 18 goals scored in six matches in the last 16 on Tuesday, with City involved in the only goalless draw. City beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in the previous round.

Guardiola said his players had "one or two days" to practice with the Mitre ball ahead of the League Cup game.

"But the ball is bad for one year or two years, it’s not acceptable," he said. "All the players complain."

One of them was Yaya Toure, who played the entire game against Wolves.

"It’s everything," Toure said. "Shooting, the ball is very light. When you touch it, it’s floating. It’s rubbish."

Matic: it's not always easy working with mourinho

The midfielder says the Portuguese coach was a key influence in his decision to move to Manchester United but his huge demands make life tough.

Nemanja Matic has admitted it is not easy to work with Jose Mourinho at times, but said he has never worked with a better manager than the Manchester United boss.

Matic worked with Mourinho at Chelsea before reuniting with him at Old Trafford ahead of this season and has played a key role in United's bright start to the campaign.

Mesut Ozil tells Arsenal teammates he's leaving for Manchester United

According to the Daily Mirror, the 29-year-old is so confident the deal will happen that he's already told his Gunners teammates.

Ozil previously played under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid before joining Arsenal in 2013, and it's believed the pair have remained on good terms.

The German could now be reunited with his former boss when the transfer window reopens after Arsene Wenger hinted that Arsenal are prepared to sell him midseason.

Keylor Navas will miss Eibar clash with adductor injury

Despite his impressive performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday evening, Keylor Navas will miss Sunday's clash with Eibar courtesy of an adductor injury.

In a medical report published by Real Madrid, it has been confirmed the Costa Rican keeper, who only just returned to action against Spurs, has not been able to train with his teammates.

The official diagnosis was an injury to his right adductor and it will need further examination in the coming days.

It is worth remembering that Navas has had fitness struggles previously this season, missing the match with Getafe through a muscular issue, Kiko Casilla deputising in his absence.

This development could extend his absence right through to the Girona fixture on October 29, although he is expected to return in time to face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on November 1.

Neymar fined 1.2 million dollars for tax evasion

Paris Saint-Germain attacker Neymar has been hit with a 3.8 million Brazilian Real fine (around 1.2 million dollars) after he acted in 'bad faith' in his attempt to delay a process for tax evasion.

The sanction was imposed on Tuesday by the Third Room of the Federal Regional Court of the Third Region of Brazil, in a process where the justice determined that in September 2015, with an embargo of 192.7 million reals (about 62.2 million dollars) on the attacker's assets as they looked to ensure the payment of taxes that were owed.

The value of the fine corresponds to two percent of the value that the federal treasury of Brazil expects to receive from Neymar for evaded taxes and fines.

Neymar was accused by the Brazilian treasury two years ago of having not paid all of his taxes in full between 2011 and 2013, and having used his family's businesses to pay less taxes.

Real Madrid squad reaffirm their trust in Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema

The glass may not be half full at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in this moment, but it's not half empty either and Real Madrid's squad are backing Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to rediscover their scoring touch.

Talk of a crisis around Los Blancos has been mitigated by the punctuated memory of the team's glorious success across last season and the two trophies already collected in 2017/18.

"Calm down, we're with you until death," has been among the phrases mentioned in an attempt to assure the strikers, with Ronaldo in particular thrown off by a five-game ban that greeted the start of his LaLiga campaign.

Although the Portuguese star has notched at a rate of one goal every 94 minutes, his tally of five in Europe has not reached the league, where he has only scored once this season.

As for Benzema, he too can only boast a solitary strike past Getafe as the wider fandom and media target the Frenchman for his lack of decisive contribution.

Everton ban fan involved in ugly Lyon scenes

Everton have announced they will ban a fan involved in the on-field brawl during Thursday's 2-1 Europa League loss to Lyon after Merseyside Police confirmed an investigation into the incident.

Players from both sides were involved in a melee behind the Lyon goal after Everton defender Ashley Williams shoved opposition goalkeeper Anthony Lopes to the floor in the 64th minute.

Video footage showed an Everton fan holding a child appearing to slap Lopes on the forehead, while some other supporters alongside the advertising hoardings grabbed at Lyon players.

Williams equalised shortly afterwards but Bertrand Traore netted a 75th minute winner against Ronald Koeman's struggling side.

A statement from Everton said: "Club officials have reviewed the footage of an incident that occurred in the 64th minute of the game against Olympique Lyonnais where supporters towards the front of the lower Gwladys Street End became involved in a confrontation between players.

"We have identified one individual whom action will now be taken against. This will include a ban from attending future Everton fixtures and the club registering a formal complaint with Merseyside Police."

Manchester City star De Bruyne wants trophies, not awards

Kevin De Bruyne insists individual accolades will mean little to him unless Manchester City are able to claim major honours this season.

Pep Guardiola's Premier League leaders continued their superb start to the season on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Napoli, making it three wins out of three in the Champions League.

De Bruyne, who was named Bundesliga Player of the Year for 2014-15 when he was at Wolfsburg, has been City's standout performer thanks to a succession of dazzling midfield performances and eye-catching assists.

But since becoming the club's record signing in August 2015, the solitary winners' medal the 26-year-old Belgium international has collected was for the 2015-16 EFL Cup.

He was injured for that penalty shoot-out triumph against Liverpool at Wembley and being viewed as a front-runner for England's top individual awards this season is not causing De Bruyne to lose sight of the bigger picture.

"It's nice to have it but I prefer it after we have a title," De Bruyne told ESPN FC.

"When I got it in Germany, it was a great honour but I wasn't happy that before we won the cup in Germany, we were second in Germany at the time.

"After that if you win it, it's a great recognition. It means that it will be forever there and that you did well."
