ROME -- Lazio remained on course for its second trophy of the season after beating Fiorentina 1-0 on Tuesday to advance the Roman squad to the Italian Cup semifinals.

Captain Senad Lulic scored early on with an expert cut back and angled shot from inside the area.

Goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha preserved the advantage by pushing wide a curling shot from Federico Chiesa midway through the second half on Fiorentina's only significant chance.

Coach Simone Inzaghi's side already upset Juventus to win the Italian Super Cup in August and was runner-up to Juventus in last season's Italian Cup.

"This is a competition we believe in," Lazio midfielder Marco Parolo said. "We want to play in another final."

The match was the first of many in Italy this week as part of an experiment of playing during the holidays.

In the semifinals, Lazio will face Inter or AC Milan, who meet in a derby on Wednesday.

In the other quarterfinals next week, Napoli hosts Atalanta and Juventus meets Turin in another derby.

Sam Allardyce to make first big signing at Everton tying youngster Jonjoe Kenny to new deal

The 20-year-old right-back is set to finalise talks on a fresh deal, with his current terms running out at the end of next season.

Big Sam will make the youngster a key player after his breakthrough into the first-team this season.

England Under-21 star Kenny started ten matches before last week’s Europa League trip to Apollon Limassol to rest for today’s Merseyside derby.

Kenny, who has been at Goodison since he was nine, has also been impressed with Allardyce’s since taking the reins from David Unsworth, who he worked with in the Academy.

Kenny said: “He has come in with his own ideas and everyone has taken to them.”

“The backroom staff he has brought in have been brilliant and we’ve kicked on.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin will also be rewarded with a new deal just seven months after he signed a new one.

Calvert-Lewin has been thrust into more first-team action than expected after Everton failed to bring in a new striker in the summer, leading the line in 15 Premier League games and the club want to him reward him for his progress.

Alaves keeps up momentum with win over Las Palmas

MADRID — Alaves defeated Las Palmas 2-0 Friday for its second consecutive victory in the Spanish league, moving a step closer to escaping the relegation zone.

Ibai Gomez scored in the 23rd minute and Munir El Haddadi added another in the 55th at Mendizorroza Stadium, helping the hosts reach 18th place in the standings, just ahead of Las Palmas.

Alaves is level on 12 points with Deportivo La Coruna, the first team outside the relegation zone.

"We just have to keep working and keep believing" El Haddadi said.

Alaves was sitting last entering the previous round, before it hired coach Abelardo Fernandez as its third manager of the season.

Abelardo was already in command when Alaves pulled off a thrilling 3-2 win over Girona by scoring three times in the final 20 minute to erase a two-goal deficit.

"They came out with more intensity. We were not expecting it," Las Palmas midfielder Javi Castellano said.

Las Palmas, now two points behind Alaves, had snapped a five-match winless run by defeating Real Betis in the previous round. It remains without a head coach since firing manager Pako Ayestaran last week. Interim coach Paquito Ortiz was on the bench on Friday.

Las Palmas has only four wins in 17 matches this season.

Barcelona has a five-point lead over Valencia at the top.

Chapecoense gets Copa Libertadores spot 1 year after tragedy

SAO PAULO — Brazil’s Chapecoense has secured a spot in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores tournament one year after a plane crash killed 19 of its players.

The southern Brazilian team beat Coritiba 2-1 Sunday with a last-minute winning goal. Chapecoense finished eighth in the local championship and qualified for South America’s most prestigious soccer club tournament in 2018.

Midfielder Elicarlos equalized for Chapecoense and striker Tulio de Melo scored the winner.

Players celebrated in tears at the Arena Conda stadium, where on Wednesday a vigil and a memorial ceremony were held for the 71 victims of the crash in November last year.

Defender Alan Ruschel, one of the survivors of the tragedy, did not play in the match but called Chapecoense’s qualification "amazing."

Torino, Atalanta draw to miss shot to close in on Europe

TURIN, Italy — Torino and Atalanta missed the chance to close in on the qualifying positions for European competition as they drew 1-1 in Serie A on Saturday.

They moved level with three other teams and six points below sixth-placed Sampdoria.

Most of the sides above them have played a match less, while fifth-placed Lazio and Samp have two matches in hand.

Torino defender Nicolas N’Koulou scored his first goal in Italian football on the stroke of halftime, heading in Adem Ljajic’s corner.

Josip Ilicic came off the bench for the second half and he had an immediate impact, firing in Andrea Petagna’s through-ball for the equalizer, nine minutes after the break.

Torino players wore a special green kit to mark the one-year anniversary of the plane crash that killed most of the Brazilian team Chapecoense.

Torino, which endured its own air disaster in 1949, normally plays in a maroon kit. A share of the profits from sales of the limited-edition kit will go to families of the victims of the air crash.

On Nov. 28 last year, a plane carrying Chapecoense to the final of the Copa Sudamericana crashed into a hillside near Medellin, Colombia, killing 71 people including 19 players and most of the club’s board and coaching staff.

In Italy, the 1949 Superga air disaster claimed 31 lives, including the "Grande Torino" side that had won five straight league titles.
